Invest In Youth and Improve Your Community
Do you worry about young people hanging around the streets with nothing to do in your area? Would you like something positive to be done about it? Do you want young people to think before they do some of the negative things they do, like litter, vandalism, crime or gangs fights? Would you like them to think more about protecting themselves from teenage pregnancy, running away and homelessness. Do you want them to get into training and job opportunities? Do you want them to be problem-solvers in your community rather than simply being seen as a problem? If so, give Fiona Scott a call here at Streetwork on 0131 476 2023 to discuss how to get a project going in your area.
Getting Down To Street Level
So what do Streetwork do? We go out onto the streets to where young people are, where they have the biggest impact on others, and get them involved in positive activities. We sit with them on pavements or park benches - hidden places where they drink and experiment with drugs - and talk with them openly and frankly about the risks they take, the impact on others, and how to reduce those risks. We seize every opportunity, using our rucksack full of resources, to get them talking about and learning about how to stay safer and healthier and how to build respect for themselves and for others. We offer them alternatives such as sports activities and games. And, we get them involved in projects that improve the community for everyone, making them feel part of something they want to protect.
Chance4Change
We provide one to one intensive support packages for young people on supervision orders and Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs). We can help individuals back into education, towards training and employment, or into sports, volunteering or other constructive activities. We can access preventative or treatment programmes to tackle any drink drug problems and help to tackle violence or behavioural problems. We can work with siblings where there are fractured relationships within families. Or contact and engage wider peer groups where this may help. Streetwork can reach the parts that the justice system can’t, such as exploring motives, problems and needs, and how others can be protected in future.
We also provide intervention packages for young people who are on Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs). We work with young people to reduce crime and tackle problems with behaviour, drink-drugs, gangs and vandalism. We provide early intervention to address problems quickly, practical and legal advice, planning and support for young people. We manage the ‘white space’ between the courts, schools, social services, the police and family; sticking with the young person to make sure they can make changes, meet appointments and ensure the system works better. Runaways Action Programme
RAP provides a much-needed service to young people who runaway from home or care in Edinburgh. We promote the Runaways Helpline offering young people advice and assistance 24 hours a day. Young people can contact us directly for support with any issue related to them running away. We also take referrals from statutory and voluntary partners like the police, social work and youth projects. We hope to encourage those who are having difficulties to think before they run. Call Kate Polson on 01314762023 to learn more.
Tenancy Support
We provide intensive support to individual young people in their first tenancy. We create an action plan to look at all areas of independent living. We make sure they have basic necessities and support with practical homemaking skills, linking into existing community based supports, emotional health, family and peer relationships and learning to make healthier and sustainable lifestyle choices. We are not in the business of doing things for young people instead we work with them until they have the skills and confidence to live independently. Then we step away, with the door always open to help them deal with any future crisis that might scupper their ability to keep the tenancy. Call Mark McCabe on 01314762023 to learn more.
