Support Service
We are out there on the streets every night of the year, in all weathers working with rough sleepers of all ages. In the city centre we look for the most vulnerable and give them crisis support. We respond immediately to crisis but our job is to help people make lasting changes for themselves: a hand up rather than a handout.
We work with some of the most vulnerable people in Edinburgh to get them off the streets, into appropriate accommodation and help them to turn their lives around. We provide support from initial contact with them on the streets right through to settling them into a new flat. We have four key services;
The Crisis Service providing advice and support for anyone who is in housing crisis.
The Womens Service specifically working with women who are homeless, have suffered domestic violence, are involved in the sex industry or need support away from our main crisis provision.
Tenancy Support helping those who are new to a tenancy to reduce the risk of becoming homeless again.
The Youth Service working with the under 25s to prevent homelessness.
Working with service users with multiple needs is what we do best. Streetwork has more than 16 years experience of successfully providing effective support and getting sustainable results for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. We have always made it our business to work with people who have the most complex and ingrained needs; the ones that other providers find the most difficult to accommodate. We get to know each individual. We go to them and work with them, establishing trust, helping them with little things first and building from there. We listen to what they say will make a difference and, working at their pace and on their terms, we help them to develop a plan, with them at the centre, towards getting them our of crisis, stabilising their housing situation and start improving their health, self esteem, relationships with others, drug dependency.
Some individuals have deep emotional experiences and scars and find it very difficult to let their guard down and trust others. Some have learning difficulties and deep-rooted patterns of behaviour. For such people, there are no quick solutions. Plans often dont work out and other factors, even seemingly small hurdles, can scupper early-attempts at progress, but, over time we get results. It requires patience, persistence, tolerance, ingenuity and the support and commitment of partner agencies to bend towards unique and very individual solutions.
