The Crisis Service is Streetwork’s newest venture and we opened its doors in April 2009 having successfully won contracts through the recent City of Edinburgh Council tendering for homeless services. The service has grown from our extensive experience in delivering street based outreach and now offers an amalgamation of building based and outreach support. The Crisis Service has allowed us to expand our reach to some of the most vulnerable people across the city.
Purpose
The Crisis Service targets and supports people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We aim to address people’s individual crisis in a way that suits them, whether this is building based or street based support.
How
The Crisis Service is a 24hr provision offering access to support in a manner that suits each person we meet.
Outreach
We are out there on the street a minimum of 14 times each week targeting and engaging with people sleeping rough, involved with street drinking, drug misuse and/or accommodation crisis. Our shifts currently go out am and pm; the morning shift enables us to find people who have slept outdoors overnight and the evening shift enables us to ensure that anyone planning to sleep rough has access to emergency accommodation. We assess their needs, find suitable temporary accommodation and can accompany them to the accommodation after providing them with food and dry clothes. The Crisis Service recognise that accommodation alone will not solve homelessness and we ensure that Service users needs are met by providing follow up support.
Drop-In
We offer centre-based drop-ins providing people access to expert advice and assistance to help them resolve their crisis. We explore and address underlying causes and help them plan a sustainable route out of crisis. Service users can simply drop-in to access crisis accommodation options, housing advice, advocacy and support. They can also access facilities to eat, wash and keep warm on a temporary basis whilst they resolve their crisis.
Over Night
The centre is open at night for all those who cannot access accommodation and who would be otherwise sleeping rough. This part of the service will be phased out by establishing further accommodation options with partner agencies and CEC.
Free Phone Number
The Crisis Service also offers a 24/7 free phone advice number for those in housing crisis – 0808 1782323
Workshop Programme
The Crisis Service runs a programme of workshops aimed to address particular issues and providing access to educational opportunities that otherwise would not be available to our service users. Some of the current workshops being offered are English lessons, literacy classes (delivered by Clan), employability workshops (in partnership with Spectrum), older persons’ workshops and Health Education and Harm Reduction.
Groups and Activities
We offer various groups and activities that although have an educational slant are always aimed at having some fun as well. Our Service user forum can steer what they feel is relevant for their service and staff are always open to suggestions from people accessing the centre.
