I’m always moaning at my partner to pick up his dirty socks and he’s always moaning that I spend my share of the rent on shoes. Its not easy being responsible for a tenancy; keeping the place clean, paying bills, getting on with neighbours and that’s with a decent job, supportive partner and a nice flat.
Most of our service users don’t have these luxuries and find themselves fending for themselves, struggling with all the new responsibility. Our Tenancy Support Team offer the kind of life skills coaching that city types pay big money for, helping with budgeting, social skills, job hunting, cooking – the list is endless.
And it’s not limited to young people kicked out of home either, many of our service users are long-term homeless, in and out of hostels and B&B’s, families, rough sleepers, women fleeing domestic violence, care leavers or recently released ex-convicts. Whatever the reason Tenancy Support helps those that are struggling to move forward.
And it works! At the end of 2007 Tenancy Support had delivered a staggering 741 hours of tenancy support to 19 clients in just 3 months. 8 of those clients even managed to keep hold of their tenancy, which is exceptional when you know their history. All the clients we worked with improved their social skills, self-esteem, and quality of life, usually becoming more independent as a result.
Clients use their tenancy support in a variety of ways; allowing them to access treatment for physical and mental health problems, or to sort out their finances by improving budgeting, changing their spending habits, and accessing social fund schemes. Over half the clients dependent on drugs managed to reduce their daily intake. Several individuals also used their support as a springboard into training and employment, working with Passport, Apex, Forth Sector, and Stevenson College.
This is all well and good but practical support is only the half of it. Perhaps most importantly, clients of Tenancy Support have described the difference it has made to have that emotional support in their lives. By providing that ear to listen they’ve been able to achieve stability, and to gradually realise their full potential. |

The Hole of Edinburgh
A Poem by John
There’s plenty in it
Dig your way out, with out a doubt,
In your mind, be kind, to yourself.
You can be on the shelf, shelf destruction.
Cause a ruction, where you go
Didn’t you know? To and fro, told you so.
Cross the bridges, go forth,
And multiply,
Do your sums, write
You’ll be alright, if your bright,
Contrite, contrary, be a fairy,
Godmother, here comes another
And’t other, for gods sake mother!
The castles terraced,
In a roundabout way
But do you know to this day
Why we look up to you?
Then run a mile
Guards on offer
When off guard.
From the street of Princes,
With a rose behind
There’s a different view, of what we do
Garden city, festival ditty,
Comedy in store
York the place I adore
The Mound, the sound,
Of the throng
You can’t go wrong,
With the Burgers. |
