We are excited to announce that Clan Childlaw and Streetwork have obtained funding from the Big Lottery Fund for an innovative new partnership project: Street Legal.
Street Legal will be a new partnership service between Clan Childlaw and Streetyouth that will provide a legal outreach service to young people in Edinburgh that are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Young people (up to the age of 26) will be able to access free, expert legal representation to enable them to secure accommodation and help with other legal issues affecting them for example contact with their children or discrimination.
We will be training Streetyouth practitioners, building on their skills to identify issues where a young person might benefit from legal advice and representation and increasing their ability to assist and support young people in engaging with the legal system and obtaining legal help . Streetyouth practitioners will be able to reach young people through their outreach service and help them to get a lawyer and stay in touch to give them the best chance of accessing Clan Childlaw’s exclusive young person centred accessible outreach legal services.
We are going to be very busy in the next month or so talking to as many housing and young people’s services providers as possible to get their ideas and the ideas of the young people they work with for the development of the service and the project, and we hope to be open for referrals from October 2016.
Streetwork couldn’t do what it does without the people who fundraise for us. Their donations make that crucial difference when we are helping somebody break the recurring cycle of homelessness. Historically we received anonymous donations with a small note of encouragement from somebody who cares. JustGiving is changing that, creating a place where people can share their adventure and what motivates them.
In the last months Ellie, Kerrae, Matthew, and Robert raised over £1200 for Streetwork through running the Edinburgh Marathon and cycling the 188 Mile Dragon Devil Sportive.
We managed to catch up with Matthew who said:
‘I decided to raise money for Streetwork so they can continue their incredible work helping the most vulnerable and overlooked members of our society. I felt inspired by their organisation’s work with people in need to help them find a long term solution to homelessness. This is something I feel is desperately undervalued so I wanted to help anyway I could!’
Matthew is hoping to do the full marathon next year and raise money for us again!
We’d like to honour our fundraisers’ amazing achievements and generosity, and to say a huge thank you from the team at Streetwork and the people you have helped us support.
