arrow Streetwork's Crisis Service

The Crisis Service is Streetwork's newest venture and we opened its doors in April 2009 having successfully won contracts through the recent City of Edinburgh Council tendering for homeless services. The service has grown from our extensive experience in delivering street based outreach and now offers an amalgamation of building based and outreach support. The Crisis Service has allowed us to expand our reach to some of the most vulnerable people across the city.

The Crisis Service targets and supports people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We aim to address people's individual crisis in a way that suits them, whether this is building based or street based support.

arrow EU National Migrants face tough struggle with homelessness

It can be lonely arriving in a new country and not speaking the language, leaving your friends and family behind to follow the promise of work. Many EU national migrants have followed this road to Edinburgh but once employment contracts have ended or the work promise never materialises, they find themselves homeless and a long long way from home.

Since 2007 Streetwork noticed a dramatic increase in the numbers of EU national migrants making use of homeless services in Edinburgh. The majority we meet speak very little or no English and most are Polish nationals. Many are unaware of what, if any, rights they have and in particularly are unaware of UK government assistance in relation to homelessness legislation.

Streetwork's First Point of Contact team have specifically targeted these individuals on the street and encouraged them to come along to drop in sessions where they have access to the telephone and a volunteer translator. Our Hardest To Reach team have been providing intensive 1:1 support to a small number of individuals who need more tailored support for their needs.

Since 2007 we have worked with 37 EU national migrants, mainly on unfamiliar issues and have had to become aware of the regulations and law applying to them. Here's a breakdown of the continuous struggles faced by this group:

arrow International Bank of New York Mellon helps towards goal of employment for the unemployable

Bank of New York Mellon has boosted Streetwork's goal of opening a social enterprise by donating £10,448.67. The money will go towards an ambitious project that will tackle the long-term unemployment of the homeless.

The bank chose Streetwork as its charity of the year through its Community Partnership Programme that looks to raise money for local charities and offer its employees time off from their normal duties to volunteer with projects that benefit the community. They were interested in Streetwork because of its successful work with Edinburgh's homeless, particularly the plans to open a centre that will offer training and paid employment for Edinburgh's homeless.

Streetwork has been providing support for vulnerable people on the streets since 1992, dealing with key issues such as homelessness, drug addiction, alcohol dependency, mental health and prostitution. Our vision for the next stage of Streetwork is to address the issue of long-term unemployment and lack of training for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless. We are looking to develop a training and employment social enterprise model that provides a meaningful and lasting route off the streets and into volunteering, training and paid employment, as well as offering affordable food for vulnerable and impoverished people. Our plan has three unique elements that combines a commercial business for the charity, a homeless cafe and a training and employment scheme.
